Blog Assignment #1: Artist Statement

Television has always been a part of my life. I remember growing up watching shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Lizzie McGuire and wanting to be an actress just like Melissa Joan Hart and Hilary Duff.  These dreams were later forgotten as I grew older because being an actress was not a reliable career path.
In high school I was very involved in the Theater department, but it was second to academics. I also went to a casting for the U.S. version of a popular British show called Skins, and made it to the final 20 people out of hundreds before getting cut. That was one of the moments where I realized I could possibly have a future in television. When I first started college in 2010, I entered as a Biology Major because science came natural to me and I was very good at it. Two years later I had finished a Pre-Med track and now had the option of taking my MCAT and applying to medical school much faster than expected.  At that moment, I realized that I did not want to go to medical school or work towards becoming a doctor. I was just playing it safe and doing something that was strongly suggested to me by my parents.
I decided to give my childhood dreams a shot and that is when I decided to switch my major. In 2012, I transferred to Hunter College declaring a Media Major because I really want to work in television. It’s what I am passionate about and I owe it to myself to at least try to work towards my dream.
Currently, I am working on a screenplay with my best friend, which we started this summer. I also have a lot of ideas for skits and hope to start a YouTube channel when I free up some of my time. I am also going on various auditions, trying to catch my big break. My work is heavily influenced by my large, crazy family, everyday observations of people and circumstances around me, and many outrageous experiences that I’ve had during my 21 years on this Earth. I am also inspired by late night comedy shows like SNL or Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Making people laugh it something I love to do and I hope to someday either be on a program like these or write for one. I want my work to bring happiness and joy to others through the best medicine of all: laughter.

One Step Closer to Graduation!!

My name is Brigitte Crime. I am 21 years old, and a student at Hunter College. I am majoring in Media Studies with a concentration in Documentary and Television Production. I am also a Theater minor. My goals are to work in television whether it is on camera or behind the scenes. In my free time, I am currently working on a screenplay. I hope this class will give me some insight on how to make my script come to life through learning more video production techniques. By this time next year, I hope to be a Hunter Graduate.
